There is a movement that begins in the soul of a leader and does not stop until it has reached the world. Under God’s Holy Spirit, formation is not contained. This work begins where every leader’s life begins: in the soul. The interior is the foundation, and there is no shortcut around it. A leader whose soul has not been formed will not be capable of what comes next, however earnest the intention. Soul-Formation is the centre — and it is the place every other ring depends on.

But Soul-Formation does not stay in the soul. A person whose interior has been gradually integrated, whose authority is no longer something they construct but something they have received — such a person begins to act differently in the world. Not because they apply their formation, but because formation, when it is real, has consequences that move outward through the rest of a life.

The Christian tradition has always understood this. Romans 12 begins with the renewal of the mind and ends with how the renewed person treats their employer, their enemy, their neighbour, their city. The same architecture sits beneath the older monastic phrase ora et labora — pray and work, both, neither without the other. Soul-Formation is the centre of a movement that the Spirit bears outward, under God’s Holy Spirit, into the whole of a life.

Die christliche Tradition hat das immer verstanden. Römer 12 beginnt mit der Erneuerung des Sinnes und endet damit, wie der erneuerte Mensch seinen Arbeitgeber, seinen Feind, seinen Nächsten, seine Stadt behandelt. Dieselbe Architektur liegt unter der älteren monästischen Formel ora et labora — bete und arbeite, beides, keines ohne das andere. The Four Rings — Soul, Stewardship, Marketplace, Society

Formation flows from the soul outward — through stewardship, marketplace, and society — without ever leaving the world. Formation fließt von der Seele nach außen — durch Stewardship, Marketplace und Society — ohne die Welt jemals zu verlassen.

Each ring carries the formation of the one beneath it. The soul, formed under God, becomes the source from which stewardship can be received as a calling rather than seized as an asset. The stewarded organisation becomes the place from which the marketplace is inhabited as vocation rather than fought as territory. The marketplace, rightly inhabited, becomes the place from which the company takes up its role in society without losing what makes it true. None of these movements is the leader’s achievement. Each is fruit, borne under God’s Holy Spirit through a person who has been formed.

This is the place where the question of who actually rules this life is settled. It is the place that the standard tools of executive development cannot reach. Soul-Formation is not the whole of the work, but it is the work that makes everything else possible. Without it, the rings beyond remain self-driven. The leader formed at the centre begins to treat the organisation differently. Strategy is shaped by what is true rather than what performs. People are governed as souls entrusted, not resources deployed. Decisions carry a weight that does not depend on the leader’s reputation. Suppliers, customers, competitors, capital — the network of the marketplace is not abandoned by the formed leader, but inhabited differently. Fairness becomes possible without sentimentality. Truthfulness becomes possible without naïveté. Competition becomes possible without consumption. The marketplace begins to receive what only a formed presence can bring. Lieferanten, Kunden, Wettbewerber, Kapital — das Netzwerk des Marketplace wird vom geformten Leiter nicht verlassen, sondern anders bewohnt. Fairness wird möglich ohne Sentimentalität. The social role the formed leader did not have when he was merely successful. Die soziale Rolle, die der geformte Leiter nicht hatte, als er nur erfolgreich war.

Every business, by its existence, reaches into the wider society — the city, the region, the public sphere. The formed leader has become a citizen in a deeper sense. Jeremiah’s instruction to seek the welfare of the city is no longer abstract. The company becomes a presence that contributes to the common good, not by virtue-signalling, but by what it actually is. The Pivot Der Wendepunkt

The Christian formation tradition has often been read as if interior surrender were the goal — as if the formed leader, having yielded, has arrived. That reading is incomplete. Yielded Faithfulness is the place at which the leader stops driving his own work and begins to carry, under God’s Holy Spirit, what is being borne through him into the world. It is not the end of the journey. It is the moment at which the journey becomes capable of bearing fruit.

A leader who arrives at Yielded Faithfulness and stops there has misunderstood the tradition. The point of formation is not contemplative withdrawal. It is the formation of a person through whom God’s Holy Spirit can carry fruit into the organisation, the marketplace, and the wider world. The interior life is the source. The world is where formation arrives.

Die christliche Formationstradition wurde oft so gelesen, als ob die innere Hingabe das Ziel wäre — als ob der geformte Leiter, nachdem er sich hingegeben hat, angekommen wäre. Diese Lesart ist unvollständig. Hingegebene Treue ist der Ort, an dem der Leiter aufhört, sein eigenes Werk anzutreiben, und beginnt, unter Gottes Heiligem Geist zu tragen, was durch ihn in die Welt getragen wird. Sie ist nicht das Ende der Reise. Sie ist der Moment, an dem die Reise fähig wird, Frucht zu tragen.

Ein Leiter, der bei Hingegebener Treue ankommt und dort stehen bleibt, hat die Tradition missverstanden. Der Sinn der Formation ist nicht kontemplativer Rückzug. Es ist die Formation eines Menschen, durch den Gottes Heiliger Geist Frucht in die Organisation, den Marketplace und die weitere Welt tragen kann. Das Innenleben ist die Quelle. Die Welt ist der Ort, an dem Formation ankommt.

The Outcome Das Ergebnis

The outcome is not performance optimised at the surface. It is a leader formed at the centre — and from that centre, fruit that the Spirit bears outward: into the organisation he stewards, the marketplace he serves, the society both inhabit.
